The Truman Show – Analysing “Cinematography”
“Good Afternoon, Good Evening, Good
Night” scene
Cinematography
Throughout
this first scene, it uses a 180 degree rule between Truman and the family
across the road during their conversation. A POV shot from Truman’s perspective
is then used when the dog jumps on him to give a sense of shock and to put the
audience in his perspective. After the dog leaves, a canted angle shot has been
used, in which I think is important as it shows that Truman is the. Then, when
the lamp is miraculously falling from the sky, an aerial shot is used to
demonstrate to the audience how high it is and how quickly it is falling. This
also creates a very dynamic and open view and gives a sense of space.
Later in
the scene, when Truman is walking through town, a vignette has been added to
give a sense that someone is watching him. Establishing shots are also used in
this part of the scene to clearly show the layout of the town. Then, when the 2
men bump into Truman, an extreme close-up shot has been used to show his
expressions and almost panic.
